When does Isle au Haut make more sense than a Mount Desert Island day at Acadia?
Isle au Haut fits when you can give it the 10:00 a.m. mailboat and the 4:30 p.m. Duck Harbor return: about five hours ashore, $48 round trip.
Planning guide · 2025-01-19· Updated 2026-09-17 · 5 minute readIsle au Haut makes more sense than a Mount Desert Island day when you can give the island a boat-to-boat block and nothing else. On the mailboat's 2026 fall schedule, running August 31 to October 12, the 10:00 a.m. sailing from Stonington reaches Duck Harbor and the last Duck Harbor return leaves at 4:30 p.m. — about five hours ashore. Switch to Mount Desert Island when anyone in the group needs the option to leave early, because that 4:30 p.m. boat is the only way off Duck Harbor after 11:15 a.m.
The boat is the plan, not the transport
The crossing itself is short. Isle au Haut Boat Services runs from Stonington on Deer Isle, stopping at the Town Landing year-round and at Duck Harbor seasonally. The operator gives about 45 minutes between Stonington and the Town Landing and another 20 minutes on to Duck Harbor. The National Park Service describes the same link as a year-round, passenger-only ferry that operates on a first-come, first-served basis.
Season decides how much island you get. Duck Harbor service runs May 23 to October 12, 2026 only. In the summer schedule, June 22 to August 29, 2026, the 10:00 a.m. boat out and the 5:30 p.m. Duck Harbor return give roughly seven hours; the fall pairing gives five. Duck Harbor Campground, the only camping on the island, is listed as open June 17 to October 5 in 2026.
What a ticket costs and how you get one
Tickets are not a booking. They are first come, first served and must be purchased in person on the day of travel at the ticket booth at 27 Seabreeze Avenue in Stonington. Round-trip fares are $48 for an adult and $24 for a child, with a $1.00 fuel surcharge added to each adult one-way fare since May 1. A bicycle costs $15 to carry, and the park notes the ferry transports bicycles to and from the Town Landing only.
Acadia's own entrance pass still applies. The park charges $20.00 per person for a visitor arriving on foot or by bicycle, valid for seven days, and it does not accept cash.
What is actually on the island
Half of Isle au Haut is Acadia; the rest is a private, year-round fishing community. The park lists 18 miles (29 km) of trails across rocky shoreline, wooded uplands, marshes and bogs, and warns that they are rough. There are 5 miles (8 km) of paved road and 7 miles (11 km) of rough unpaved road, with mountain bikes recommended. Services are thin: almost none, apart from a small store and post office with limited hours near the Town Landing. Dress for the water. Island temperatures average 10ºF (5ºC) cooler than the mainland.
The trail list is short enough to plan from directly. Duck Harbor Mountain is 1.2 miles (1.9 km), about 1.5 hours, difficult; Western Head is 1.3 miles (2.1 km), about 1.25 hours, moderate; Eben's Head is 0.8 miles (1.3 km), about 30 minutes, easy.
Build the day backward from the return
Example, two adults on a Thursday in late September 2026. Buy tickets at the booth by 9:30 a.m., take the 10:00 a.m. boat, land at Duck Harbor about 11:05. That leaves five hours and twenty-five minutes before the 4:30 p.m. return. Spend it on Duck Harbor Mountain and Western Head, about 2.5 miles of trail and 2 hours 45 minutes of walking by the park's own times, plus lunch carried from the mainland and an hour on the shore. Be back at the landing by 4:15. Two adult round trips: $96, plus $40 in entrance passes.
Working backward from a fixed boat is the whole skill here, and it is the same one that governs any exploration day with a return margin or any route that depends on a seasonal service.
When Mount Desert Island wins
Take the island day only if the group can carry its own food and water for the full interval and walk rough ground without a bail-out. Otherwise the east side of the park gives you the same coast with an exit at every hour. Check what is closed before either version: Acadia's alerts page carries the running list of storm damage to shoreline trails and steps, including Ocean Path and the Little Hunters Beach stairs. For the mainland coastal alternative that keeps the day flexible, compare the Schoodic Peninsula decision.
