Can Cuyahoga Valley make a rail-and-trail weekend instead of a long-distance national-park trip?
Cuyahoga Valley is free, the Towpath runs 20 miles inside the park, and the railroad's $10 Explorer one-way ride runs May 23 to Labor Day, Wednesday to Sunday.
Planning guide · 2025-04-17· Updated 2026-09-17 · 5 minute readYes, and it costs less than almost any other national-park weekend: the park's fees page states that an entrance pass is not required, and the Ohio and Erie Canal Towpath Trail page gives 20 miles within the national park on a flat surface of compacted, crushed limestone with some paving. The rail half is seasonal. The Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad's Explorer Program page prices a one-way ride at $10 per hiker, runner, or biker and runs it May 23 through Labor Day, Wednesday through Sunday. Outside that window, build the weekend as an out-and-back and treat the train as an excursion instead of a shuttle.
The one-way ride is a season, not a service
The Explorer Program, formerly Bike Aboard, is what makes a point-to-point Towpath day possible without a car shuttle. Its page states that all eight depots — Rockside, Canal Exploration Center, Brecksville, Boston Mills, Peninsula, Indigo Lake, Botzum and Akron Northside — are open to Explorer riders, that you stand in view of the train crew to signal your ride, and that you pay on the train with no need to book in advance. Fares are $10 per hiker, runner, or biker, $15 per kayaker, $20 per tandem rider, and $60 for an Explorer Pass good for unlimited one-way rides all season. Bicycles and e-bikes must be under 40 lbs, and e-bike batteries must be removed before transport. The season carries exceptions: June 3 to 16, and the Fridays of July 10, July 24, August 7, August 21 and September 4.
Twenty miles of Towpath, minus the part that is closed
A national park 20 miles long has exactly one segment you cannot skip past, and right now it is under construction. The park's current conditions page gives tentative closure dates of August 24 to November 20, 2026 and March 29 to April 21, 2027 for the Towpath between Boston and Peninsula, for complete replacement of the wooden Stumpy Basin boardwalk, and closes Oak Hill Road between the northern corporate line of Cuyahoga Falls and the Everett Road connector after an embankment failure along Furnace Run. Dickerson Run Trail is closed until further notice and Ice Box Cave is closed to protect bats from white-nose syndrome. Read that page first and pick your two trailheads second.
Pick the train that matches the day
When the Explorer season is over, the railroad still runs a full excursion. The National Park Scenic page describes a 26-mile journey through the park, boarding at Rockside Station in Independence, Peninsula Station, or Akron Station, with the Classic ride running approximately 4 hours and 15 minutes and the Express approximately 2 hours and 20 minutes, and tickets from $25 to $38 per person. That is a sitting day, not a moving one. Pair it with a short walk rather than a long ride, because a 4-hour-15-minute Classic plus a 20-mile bike day is two full days pretending to be one. The Express is the better half of a shared weekend: it leaves most of an afternoon intact, and it still covers the canal corridor the Towpath follows on foot. Choose the Classic only when the train itself is the day's purpose and nobody in the group is counting miles.
Example: a mid-September weekend without the shuttle
Example, two adults driving up from Columbus after work on Friday. Saturday: park at Lock 39 in the north, ride the Towpath south and back for about 16 miles round trip on the crushed limestone, staying north of the Boston-to-Peninsula closure. The park's hours page states that Cuyahoga Valley is open every day of the year, with Brandywine Falls, Ledges, Octagon, Kendall Lake, Happy Days South Parking Area and Kendall Hills closed from dusk to morning opening — so the falls is a daylight stop, not an after-dinner one. Sunday: the 2-hour-20-minute Express from Peninsula at $25 to $38 each, then a short ledges walk before the drive home. With the Explorer season ended on Labor Day, nothing about that weekend depends on flagging a train, which is the point of testing whether a route idea rests on a seasonal service before you book around it. Two towns anchor the weekend rather than one park gate, which is worth reading against what makes a town a good base, and a point-to-point ride always needs a return margin you can defend.
