How does Big Bend Ranch State Park differ from a Big Bend National Park-focused trip?
Big Bend Ranch costs $5 a day and closes completely for scheduled hunts on five 2026 dates; Big Bend National Park charges $30 per vehicle and stays open.
Planning guide · 2025-04-06· Updated 2026-09-17 · 4 minute readThe sharpest difference is not scenery, it is whether the gate is open at all. Texas Parks & Wildlife's park closure alert closes Big Bend Ranch State Park to the general public for permitted hunters from 5 p.m. Oct. 4 to 2 p.m. Oct. 8, 5 p.m. Oct. 11 to 2 p.m. Oct. 15, 5 p.m. Nov. 21 to 2 p.m. Nov. 25, 5 p.m. Dec. 6 to 2 p.m. Dec. 10, and 5 p.m. Dec. 13 to 2 p.m. Dec. 17. Big Bend National Park has no equivalent shutdown; its fees page sells a $30.00 private-vehicle pass valid for 7 days, $25.00 for a motorcycle, $15.00 per person on foot or bicycle, and a $55.00 Big Bend Annual Pass. Check the state park's calendar before you check anything else.
Two managers, two price lists, two front doors
The state park is cheaper and smaller-gated. Its entrance fee page charges $5 daily for ages 13 and older, admits ages 12 and under free, and sells a Texas State Parks Pass for $70 per year covering more than 80 state parks. The park's main page says the park is open daily, with the east entrance at Barton Warnock Visitor Center in Terlingua and the west entrance at Fort Leaton State Historic Site near Presidio both staffed 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily, and the interior at Sauceda Ranger Station offering a bathroom and shower facility open 24/7. Those are ranger-station hours, not gate hours, and they matter because Sauceda is where the interior permits and the road advice come from.
Roads are the commitment, not trails
The state park's headline numbers describe a network, not an itinerary. The main park page lists 238 miles of multiuse trails for hiking, biking and riding horses, and nearly 70 miles of unmaintained dirt roads intended for high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles. Pick one route category that your actual vehicle can hold. The park's activities page names walks that a rental sedan can reach the start of:
Scroll sideways to see the full table →
| Route | Distance | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Cinco Tinajas Trail | ¾ mile | Short interior walk to a series of tinajas |
| Ojito Adentro Trail | 1 mile | Spring-fed canyon pocket with cottonwoods |
| Cerro Chilicote Loop Trail | 3.2 miles | Loop with desert-mountain views |
| Fresno Canyon Trail | 5 miles there and back | Longer canyon route into the Fresno drainage |
A national-park-focused trip inverts this. There, paved district roads carry most visitors and the four-wheel-drive network is optional. Here, the four-wheel-drive network is the park.
Heat is a gate, not a challenge
Texas Parks & Wildlife states on the main park page that temperatures typically exceed 100 degrees by late morning and can reach as high as 130 degrees in the sun. That is a departure rule with a number in it: if the forecast puts late morning above 100°F, the day is a short walk before 9 a.m. and a drive afterward, or it is a different month. Late October through March is the season the state park's own walking network fits. The same page carries a statewide screwworm alert dated June 13, 2026, asking visitors to check pets and livestock often and to report unusual wounds rather than move the animal.
Example: three nights on the Presidio side in February
Example, two adults in a front-wheel-drive rental. Night one in Presidio; enter at Fort Leaton when it opens at 8 a.m., pay $10 for the pair, and drive FM 170 east. Keep day one short: the ¾-mile Cinco Tinajas Trail in the morning and the 1-mile Ojito Adentro Trail after lunch, both well before the late-morning heat threshold in a warmer month. Day two, the 3.2-mile Cerro Chilicote Loop early, then the drive to Terlingua and the Barton Warnock Visitor Center before it closes at 4:30 p.m. Day three crosses into the national park, where the $30 vehicle pass covers seven days and pays for itself the moment you stay a second night. Booking both halves is a question of reading two managers' maps against each other, and if the hunt dates or the heat rule out your week, the honest move is saving the state park for another season.
