How do I decide whether Cumberland Island’s ferry-linked coast fits my trip better than a drive-up beach town?

Cumberland works when the 9:00 a.m. ferry and the 4:45 p.m. return fit: about seven hours ashore, 45 minutes each way, $15 per person to enter.

Illustrated Georgia island with passenger ferry, wooded path, beach, bicycles, and access decision table

Take Cumberland Island when you can give it the 9:00 a.m. boat out and the 4:45 p.m. boat back. The park's own timetable puts departures at 9:00 a.m. and 11:45 a.m. and returns at 10:15 a.m., 2:45 p.m. and 4:45 p.m., with a crossing of about 45 minutes — so that pairing is close to seven hours ashore. Switch to a drive-up beach town when the morning boat does not fit your schedule, because the alternative from March through September is the 11:45 a.m. out and the 2:45 p.m. back: barely two hours on an island that sells nothing.

Ferry pairingHours ashoreWhen it runs

9:00 a.m. out, 2:45 p.m. backAbout 5 hoursMonday to Saturday, March 1 to September 30
11:45 a.m. out, 4:45 p.m. backAbout 4 hoursYear-round, on operating days

Operating days change twice a year. The ferry runs seven days a week from March 1 to November 30 and five days a week, Thursday to Monday with no service Tuesday or Wednesday, from December 1 to February 28. The 2:45 p.m. return disappears in the fall: the operator lists it only in the March 1 to September 30 schedule, not the October 1 to November 30 one.

What it costs before you touch the sand

The park charges $15.00 per person for a seven-day entrance pass, with an annual pass at $45.00 covering four adults. Everyone over 16 needs one, children under 16 do not, and the park does not accept cash. The ferry ticket is separate, and the operator notes that the park entrance fee is not included and is purchased on site before boarding.

Booking is the part people get wrong. Reservations can be made up to six months in advance, and refunds must be requested at least 10 days before sailing, minus a 20% per-ticket cancellation fee. You must also purchase the departure and the return together; one-way purchases are subject to cancellation.

Arrive an hour early or lose the seat

Check-in is not a formality. The park says it begins one hour before departure at the Mainland Visitor Center and that all unclaimed reservations are canceled 30 minutes before departure and offered to walk-in visitors. The operator repeats the hour and adds that an orientation and safety talk takes place 15 minutes before departure. The Mainland Visitor Center is open daily 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., which is why the 9:00 a.m. boat wants an 8:00 a.m. arrival in St Marys.

Bring the bike, or plan to walk

There is no vehicle option. The operator allows no cars, kayaks or pets on the ferry. Bicycles change the reachable distance more than anything else you can decide, and the park does not rent them; you bring your own and reserve space with the ferry. Space is tight: 15 bikes per ferry trip at a $10 transport fee per bike, with leftover space sold first come, first served at mainland check-in. Riding rules are narrow too. Bikes stay on roads not marked private, cannot go on any trails, and are allowed on the beach only between the Sea Camp and Dungeness dune crossings.

Carry the day with you. The operator is blunt that there is nothing to purchase once you reach the island, and that the boat sells ice, firewood, chips and drinks only while it is docked at Sea Camp. Water, food, sunscreen, rain gear and walking shoes are the list.

An example day on the 9:00 boat

Example, two adults, a Saturday in April. Park in St Marys and check in at 8:00 a.m. Two entrance passes, $30.00; two bikes across, $20.00. Land at Sea Camp about 9:45 and ride the main road north to the Dungeness area, walk the ruins on foot with the bikes left at the rack, then cross to the beach between the Dungeness and Sea Camp crossings for the middle of the day. Back at the dock by 4:15 for the 4:45 p.m. return, in St Marys at 5:30.

Before any of that, read the park's alerts page, which during hurricane season carries the National Weather Service tropical briefing for the island. A fixed boat is the single point of failure in this plan, which is the general case in any route that depends on a ferry or a seasonal service, and the same arithmetic decides whether Channel Islands earns its logistics.
